There isn’t a way to handle watercolors easily. Of all painting media, it is probably the hardest to learn. Watercolors are unforgiving and difficult to correct mistakes. The most important part of watercolor painting is the paper. It has to be artist quality, acid free and at least 140 lb. Inexpensive brushes should be made of white or golden synthetic hair. Start painting with transparent pigments.

1. Learn how to do washes, wet into wet, wet into dry, dry brush and layering techniques. Most beginning watercolor books will show you how to do these.
2. You have to paint the lightest colors first, light to dark.

A good book or DVD on beginning watercolor painting will answer a lot of questions. You can also look for Youtube videos.
